The Maryland State Golf Association will host the 101st Maryland State Amateur Championship from Thursday, June 9th to Sunday, June 12th, at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, MD. This will be the club’s second time hosting the Maryland State Amateur Championship. The club last hosted the championship in 1977, where Gary Mankulish was crowned champion. Argyle has 16 members of their own, the most of any club, competing in this year’s championship.

The Maryland Amateur is open to any amateur golfer with a USGA handicap index of 7.1 or less, and they also must be a member of an MSGA member club. Four qualifying rounds have narrowed down an entry of 463 golfers in the Amateur Championship to a final field of 138 golfers, including 36 exempt players. Of these 138 golfers, five past champions have also qualified; Brad Whitaker (2021), Billy Peel (2020, 2019), Michael Mulieri (2008), Billy Wingerd Jr (2004), and David Nocar (2002). On Thursday, a stroke play qualifying round will be played for a chance at 31 spots in the match play field, with the defending champion, Brad Whitaker, automatically qualifying.
