December 6th, 2023 – The United States Golf Association (USGA) and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews (R&A) have announced revised golf ball testing conditions set to be implemented in 2028. The updated conditions for golf ball testing will be a clubhead speed of 125 mph (equivalent to a 183 mph ball speed), a spin rate of 2200 rpm, and a launch angle of 11 degrees. The conditions established 20 years ago were a 120 mph clubhead speed (equivalent to a 176 mph ball speed), a spin rate of 2520 rpm, and a launch angle of 10 degrees.

For the majority of recreational golfers, the alteration in testing speed is projected to have a minimal impact on distance, likely resulting in a reduction of 5 yards or less. Research indicates that, on average, male golfers have a swing speed of 93 mph, while female players typically have a swing speed of 72 mph.
