Catonsville, Md. – The 33rd Maryland Two-Woman Championship took place at Rolling Road Golf Club on Thursday, August 20. Fourteen teams took to the course for their chance at claiming victory in either the championship or first flight.

Championship Division

Gross

Eight teams competed within the championship division and followed an 18-hole four-ball stroke play format. The top two teams in the gross division and the winner of the net division were awarded prize money.

Jessica Spicer of USGA/Maryland-DC GC and Sarah Spicer-Baldwin of Argyle Country Club clinched their third consecutive victory in the championship, clearing the field by four strokes. The duo made three birdies against one bogey on the front nine to make the turn at two-under. The pair continued their strong play after the turn, carding three consecutive birdies to open the back nine. The sisters played the remainder of their round flawlessly to round out the day with a five-under-par 66 and yet another victory.

Two teams finished the day at one-under-par 70, but it was Joelle Johnson of USGA/Maryland-DC GC and Lani Park of Turf Valley Resort who secured the second-place position after the tie was broken using the USGA-recommended method for determining a winner when a playoff is not feasible, as outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf. Johnson and Park tallied four birdies against three bogeys to wrap up the second-place finish.

Net

Elisa Hermes of the MSGA eClub and Carly Hunt of Rolling Road Golf Club took home net honors after finishing their round with a net score of five-under-par 66. The pair carded six birdies and an eagle against three bogeys to clinch the net division by a stroke.

Bev Lane and Lisa Kay of Congressional Country Club finished just behind in second place with a net total of four-under-par 67 after tallying six birdies and an eagle against four bogeys.

First Flight

The first flight used the Stableford format. In Stableford, players earn points based on their performance on each hole. Instead of counting total strokes, points are awarded for scores in relation to a fixed target score. For this event, players received points as follows:

  • Zero points: More than one over the fixed target score or no score returned
  • One point: One over the fixed target score
  • Two points: hitting the fixed target score
  • Three points: one under the fixed target score
  • Four points: two under the fixed target score
  • Five points: three under the fixed target score
  • Six points: four under the fixed target score.

For example, if a player scores one under par on a par-4 hole, they receive three points. The top two teams in first flight were awarded prize money.

33rd Maryland Two-Woman First Flight Champions Helen Mulford and Lynn Snyder

Two teams compiled a total of 39 points, but it was Helen Mulford and Lynn Snyder of Compass Pointe Golf Courses who took home the first-place finish. After the USGA-suggested tie-breaker method was implemented, Jocelyn Lamond and Kerry Murray of Kenwood Golf and Country Club ended with a second-place finish after also posting a total of 39 points.

The MSGA would like to thank the staff and membership of Rolling Road Golf Club for hosting a fantastic day of golf.
