The Maryland State Golf Association mourns the passing of William K. “Bill” Smith, a steward of the game and one of the MSGA’s most influential leaders in its history.

Bill served the Association for more than 35 years, including as Executive Director from 2001 to 2020. During that period, he guided the MSGA through extraordinary growth and modernization, transforming it from a largely volunteer organization into a professionally organized and operated association with a full-time staff and expanded services for golfers and member clubs throughout Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Under Bill’s steadfast leadership, the MSGA introduced numerous initiatives that continue to shape the Association today, including online tournament registration and live scoring; Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year and Outstanding Achievement awards; an electronic magazine; academic scholarships; and the launch of Youth on Course – Maryland, a cornerstone initiative focused on access, opportunity, and long-term engagement in the game for young people in Maryland and the District of Columbia. He also played a central role in fundraising, purchasing, and renovating the MSGA headquarters, Emich House, a lasting symbol of the Association’s progress during his tenure.

Beyond Maryland, Bill was widely respected at the regional and national levels. He served on the USGA Regional Affairs Committee and the USGA Rules Committee. His lifelong dedication to the game earned him numerous honors, including induction into the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame in 2024 and the Middle Atlantic Golf Association Hall of Fame. He also received the USGA’s Isaac B. Grainger Award, the National Golf Course Owners Association Golf Leader Award, and the MSGA’s Dawson Stump Outstanding Achievement Award. The MSGA’s Past Presidents Event and Trophy proudly bear his name, reflecting the esteem in which he is held.

Bill’s legacy is measured not only by programs and progress but also by the integrity, care, and humility with which he served the game and the people who love it. He leaves an indelible mark on the MSGA and on golf in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

On behalf of the MSGA Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and members, we extend our deepest condolences to Bill’s family and loved ones. We are forever grateful for his leadership, friendship, and unwavering commitment to the Maryland State Golf Association.
