The Maryland State Golf Association will conduct the 100th Maryland Amateur Championship from Thursday, June 10th to Sunday, June 13th at Rolling Road Golf Club in Catonsville, MD. This year will be the eighth time Rolling Road has hosted the Maryland Amateur Championship. Rolling Road hosted the very first MD Amateur Championship in 1921, 100 years ago, so it was only appropriate to have them host again our centennial celebration year. Rolling Road also has 11 members of their own competing in this year’s championship, which is the most out of all other golf clubs with players competing.
The Maryland Amateur is open to any amateur golfer with a USGA handicap index of 7.1 or less, who is a member of an MSGA member club. An entry of 431 golfers in the Amateur Championship has been narrowed down by means of four qualifying rounds to a final field of 135 golfers, which includes 38 exempt players. On Thursday, a stroke-play qualifying round will be played for a chance at 32 spots in the match play field, with the defending champion automatically qualifying.
There were four qualifiers for the Amateur, the first at Maryland G & CC on April 26th, where Chris Baloga from Hillendale CC carded an impressive 2-under par, 71, to lead the field. On May 3rd at Cattail Creek, Joseph Scheffres from Woodmont CC earned the top qualifying spot with an outstanding 3-under par, 68. The third qualifier, held at CC at Woodmore on May 13th, was led by a tie between Luke Schaap and Ryan McCarthy, both from Argyle CC, with a 1-under par, 71. At the final qualifier on May 18th at Prospect Bay CC, Sean Boyle from Rolling Road took the top spot with another impressive 2-under par, 69, on the day.
William Peel, IV from Columbia CC will look to defend his Amateur Championship title next week. Peel will also be competing in a stacked field at the Maryland Open Championship at Baltimore CC on July 12-14. Alongside Peel, Bennett Espenshade, age 15 from The Elkridge Club, will be competing as the youngest player in the field at the Maryland Amateur Championship.
Live scoring will be available during the match play rounds on Friday through Sunday.
