The Maryland State Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship was held at the University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park on Tuesday, June 15th. Forty-four competitors played the 5,237 yard course with both gross and net prizes awarded. Overnight prior to the event, the region was struck with severe thunderstorms that brought heavy rain and even hail to parts of Maryland. The superintendent and his staff worked diligently all morning to ensure the course was in great condition for this championship. The players were fortunate to have a beautiful summer day with temperatures reaching the high 70’s and a gentle breeze.
Amy Phelan, Worthington Manor Golf Club and a resident of Reston, Virginia turned in the low round of two-over-par to edge out Elisabeth Herzfeld-Rice who returned a score of 73. Amy Phelan’s round included consecutive birdies on holes #3 and #4 which helped her to make the turn at one-under-par. Phelan had two more birdies on the back nine on #12 and #15, but had a challenging time on the final three holes, finishing with a double bogey on 16 and two bogeys on 17 and 18. This marks Phelan’s first championship win with the Maryland State Golf Association.
For the net portion of the event, Qin Zhang, Lakewood Country Club and a resident of Rockville placed first with a five-under-par net 65. Liz Dahreddine, Falls Road Golf Course was the net runner-up with a score of 68.
