The teams of Shaun Deering-Scott McInerney and Gary Hann-Chip Henderson, competing in the men’s back and forward divisions respectively, were atop of the leaderboard following a One-Day Four-Ball tournament conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association on Tuesday, June 1st at Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville. Both teams’ scores were also enough for the low net rounds of the day in their respective divisions, earning them the low net prizes for the event. In the mixed/women division, Donna Woodruff-Mark Woodruff earned the prize for first place (gross), and Becky Wedemeyer-Christine Bechtel earned first-place (net).

Deering and McInerney, posted a team gross score of 65 (-7) for the men’s back division. Their efforts led to a net score of 62 with a net eagle on hole 5 and net birdies on holes 10 and 15. There was little doubt that McInerney’s score of 67 on his own ball would end up as the low individual round of the day. The C.C. at Woodmore’s duo only dropped one shot as a team the entire day.

With Deering-Mclnerney earning the low net prize, The Cannon Club’s own Andrew Turgeon and Joey Dilovodico won low gross with a round of 66 (-6). Turgeon-Dilovodico had a one setback on the 4th hole but recovered quickly, by recording six birdies on the final thirteen holes. They won the scorecard playoff against and Callahan-Micholas.

Matty Callahan, (Columbia C.C.) and Blake Micholas (Congressional C.C.) earned second-place (gross) for the men’s back division with 34-32—66 (-6). Montgomery Country Club’s Angelo Catucci and Mark McKenna finished in second place (net) with a score of 33-33-66 which included four birdies (two net and two gross) and a net eagle. 23 teams registered to compete in the Men’s Back division and played from the white tees measuring 6239 yards.

The Congressional C.C. duo of Gary Hann and Chip Henderson were able to post a score of 66 (-6) to edge out the rest of the field in the men’s forward division. With a total of eight birdies (six gross and two net) they bested the team of Len Moyer (Hobbits Glen GC) and Tim Kowalchick (Montgomery C.C), who posted a net score of 67 (-5). Al Aldana (The C.C. at Woodmore) and Cesar Rodas (P.B. Dye GC) also posted a score of 67 (-5), but due to the scorecard playoff they ended up earning 3rd place (net) in the men’s forward division. With Hann-Henderson earning the low net prize for the men’s forward division, MSGA eClub members, Scott Squire and James Turner posted a score of 72 (E) earned first place gross. With birdies on the 9th and 12th hole, Squire-Turner were able to gain the edge over John Halley (Indian Creek Yacht and C.C.) and Mike Davis (Montgomery C.C.). Halley-Davis posted a gross score of 73 (+1) to earn second place (gross). The pair had four birdies but a bogey on the 18th hole left them one stroke behind first place (gross).  17 teams registered to compete in the Men’s Forward division and played from the gold tees measuring 6054 yards.

First place (net) in the mixed/women division was earned by the duo playing out of Norbeck C.C, Becky Wedemeyer and Christine Bechtel, who shot a 68 (-4) to edge out the other duo from Norbeck, John and Claudia Criag, who shot a 69 (-3). Becky Wedemeyer’s net birdie on the 18th hole ultimately gave them the edge. Mark and Donna Woodruff out of the C.C. of Maryland, won first place gross in the mixed/women division. With Wedemeyer-Bechtel winning first place net, and not being able to also win gross, the Woodruff’s posted a score of 77 (+5) and separated from the rest of the field by carding three birdies. Eight teams registered to compete in the Mixed/Women’s division. The men played from the gold tees measuring 6054 yards and the Women played from the green tees measuring 5433 yards.

The committee for MSGA One-Day tournaments uses the USGA recommended method for breaking ties when a playoff is not feasible, outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf. This method uses a match of cards for scores from the back nine. If there is still a tie, it goes to the last six, last three, and finally the eighteenth hole.

The format for the 48 teams was Four-Ball stroke play, often referred to as better-ball. In Four-Ball, Competitors play as partners, with each playing their own ball. The lower score for the partners is the score for the hole.  If a player is certain that their score will not count on a particular hole, they are not required to finish the hole, but one member of the team must hole out.

Montgomery Country Club history dates back to when it opened in 1963. It sits on a piece of land that used to be the Green Lands Farms Turf Farm. With plenty of contours from tee to green, course architect Mr. Edmund Halt, designed a course that is challenging.  Ault was one of the founders of Ault, Clark & Associates, Ltd. The team at Ault, Clark & Associates have either built or helped resigned around 70 courses in the state of Maryland. Some of those courses do not exist today but they have helped courses like Columbia C.C., Congressional C.C. (gold), Chevy Chase Club, and etc.
