The MSGA held the fourth annual 100 Hole Hike, benefitting Youth on Course Maryland, on Tuesday, September 20th at the Suburban Club. At the break of dawn, eight “hikers” teed off on their journey to play 100 holes of golf in one day, while walking and carrying their clubs, to raise money and awareness for Youth on Course Maryland. The eight hikers split into two foursomes in an attempt to increase their pace of play, and managed to get around the 18-hole par 70 course in approximately 1hr 45 min. per round, for a total of 5.5 rounds +1 hole. As each round passed, hikers ditched their shoes to go barefoot to beat the blisters (pictured below). Within the last 10 holes of the day, Michael Norton proved his resilience with a hole-in-one on par three #16! Matt Lawrence & Andrew Butts kept themselves focused by tracking every swing they made throughout the day using the deWiz Golf © Swing Modifier to gather data on how the swing changes as a player gets tired. Andrew Butts is a scratch golfer and played collegiately, but it’s no surprise to see how the average length of his backswing dropped nearly 4 inches from hole 1 to 100. Thank you DeWiz Golf for supporting YOC Maryland!
“[The 100 Hole Hike] was the most fun of golf I’ve had in a while. At first thinking playing 100 holes in one day was near impossible especially on a regulation sized course. To successfully complete 100 holes in one day from sunrise to sunset is a true remarkable experience that not many get to share and to do it all for a cause is even greater. 5.5 rounds of golf, 61,000 steps, and 30 miles walked. And we didn’t let our feet off the gas. We went after it from hole 1 to hole 100.” – Dante Frederico
“I’ve never smiled so much on a golf course in one day! We created best friends out of complete strangers, something that is really all too common with this crazy game, but it’s an aspect I’d never change! Starting the day with the task of 100 holes by sunset seemed impossible, yet every participant believed. We never wavered and were always there for a good comedic pick me up when we saw someone falling behind! It’s tough to pick words to describe how great the 100 hole hike was with the MSGA. Suburban Club played a spectacular host site! We can’t wait to lace up the shoes, maybe with an extra pair of socks from the start next year, and enjoy the walk of another 100 holes!” – Dalton Deardorff
