The teams of Scott McInerney-Mike Walsh and Barry Andrews-Craig Whitaker, competing in the men’s back and forward divisions, respectively, were atop the leaderboard following a One-Day Four-Ball tournament conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association on Monday, October 25th, at the Country Club at Woodmore.
Mike Walsh and Scott McInerney (Oak Creek Club) posted a team net score of 66 (-6) in the men’s back division. With six birdies (five gross and one net), the duo was able to shoot four-under on the back nine to help them capture first place and win the net prize.
With the Walsh-McInerney earning the low net prize, Ron Thomas (The Cannon Club) and Rob Menefee (Swan Point Y&CC) won low gross with a round of 68 (-4). Thomas-Menefee got off to a quick start with two birdies on the first two holes. Besides the double bogey on No. 3, they were able to win the scorecard playoff against Kyle Carranza and Brady Jameson (Breton Bay G&CC) by one shot for first place gross.
Carranza-Jameson earned second place (gross) in the men’s back division with 33-35-68 (-4). The Bretton Woods duo of Aditya Narain and Jack Jennings finished in second place (net) with a score of 32-34-66 (-6), with seven net birdies. In the mixed division, Karen Crowley (Greystone Golf Course) and Danny Palumbo earned first place (net) prize with an eight-under-par (64). Two net eagles helped secure the first-place finish for Crowley and Palumbo. Bob and Kimbra Benson were able to shoot 67 (-5). An eagle on the par-five eighteenth and six birdies gave the Benson’s a good lead to hold off the rest of the division. Seven teams competed in the mixed division. The men played from the black tees measuring 5,565 yards, while the women played from the blue tees measuring 4,616 yards.
In the women’s division, the Bretton Woods duo of Claudine Sorel and Caroline Barbeau finished first place net at seven-under-par (65). Four gross and three net birdies help the pair secure the net title. Two teams competed in the Women’s division, and they played from the blue tees measuring 4,616 yards.
The committee for MSGA One-Day tournaments uses the USGA recommended method for breaking ties when a playoff is not feasible, outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf.
The format for the 48 teams was Four-Ball stroke play, often called better ball. In Four-Ball, Competitors play as partners, each playing their own ball. The lower score for the partners is the score for the hole. If a player is confident that their score will not count on a particular hole, they are not required to finish the hole, but one team member must hole out.
