David Lughermo and Scott Kremer are familiar figures in the Maryland State Golf Association’s One-Day series of tournaments. And earlier, Lughermo was partnered by Jeremias Cipriano and over the years, both teams have been successful playing from the Back Tees.

Lughermo-Kremer, who won low gross in this year’s opening event at Norbeck Country Cub in Rockville, were at it again on August 19, as they placed first in the gross division with 40 points in the Stableford (1 point for a bogey, 2 for a par, 3 for a birdie, 4 for an eagle etc.) format at the Golf Club at South River. The Norbeck event used the same format too, as they won low gross with 37 points on a match of cards.

Lughermo had four natural front-nine birdies (he shot 68 for the round) and Kremer, one natural birdie for the 6,377-yard course that played to a par of 36-35–71. In addition to winning earlier this year, the Lughermo-Kremer team won a Four-Ball event at Crofton CC, and Lughermo-Larry Siu won a Stableford at Holly Hills CC in 2018. Prior to that Lughermo and Cipriano won a Four-Ball at Turf Valley CC in 2017, and took a second gross at Eagle’s Nest in 2016.

Tyler Potts, Swan Point Y&CC,and Michael Weller, from the University of Maryland GC earned second gross with 39. Each provided a spark in the round with two natural birdies each.

Pedro Carrasco, from Blue Mash GC, and Marcos Rodriguez, who registered through MSGA e-Club, won low net with 49, followed by David Reynolds, University of Maryland GC, and Ron Thomas, The Cannon Club, 44. Carrasco and the Reynolds-Thomas entry go back several years with the program, including a net win by each last year and a Thomas win this year with Andrew Turgeon at the Suburban Club.

Carrasco and Rodriguez each had a net eagle, and Thomas had a run of three successive birdies in the middle of the back nine.

The University of Maryland GCs Scott Grebenstein and Kevin Smith won low gross from the Forward Tees (5,532 yards) with 38 points, posting the score early then waiting to see if it held up. It did, as Kevin McMahon-Mark Parker, from Leisure World, and Bill Barrett, from GC at South River and Chris Doerrer, CC Woodmore, followed with 36’s.

Michael Curtis, from Fox Hollow GC, and John Wood, Poor Boys GC, took low net with 48 points, as they highlighted the round with a net-eagle apiece on each side. Steven Gordon, MSGA e-Club, and John Jay, Hayfields CC, finished second with 46. Derek Kromm, MSGA e-Club, and Robert Yunker, P.B. Dye GC, posted 45, edging three other 45’s by virtue of a 25 on the back nine.

With one net prize at stake for the three Mixed Teams, John and Kate Rogers nipped Lewis and Sue Shipp, from Hobbit’s Glen GC, 47 to 46. John Rogers entered through MSGA e-Club, while Kate signed in from Compass Pointe GC.

The last of this year’s series will be held October 4, at Hillendale CC.
