The 102nd Maryland Women’s Amateur Championship was held at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Maryland on July 17-19, 2023.  Argyle Country Club hosted the Men’s State Amateur in 2022 and is home to 10 competitors from this years’ field.  The par 73 course was in top-championship condition posing a challenging test of the players’ skills.

The once four-day, now three-day, tournament started with a stroke-play qualifying round on Monday to determine the sixteen players to compete in the Championship flight. Clare Connolly, defending Women’s State Amateur Champion, held the number one seed. Abigail Avallone (15), of Congressional Club and 2023 Maryland Girls Junior Champion, rightfully earned the medalist prize with a jaw-dropping seven-under-par, 66, a possible women’s tournament course record at Argyle Country Club (undergoing review).

The field was divided into four flights to compete in up to four rounds of match play over the following two days.  Sarah Spicer of Argyle Country Club was crowned 102nd Maryland Women’s Amateur Champion after defeating defending champion, Clare Connolly of Chevy Chase Club, 2 & 1 in the final match.

Argyle proved its home-course advantage with members capturing the win in all four flights for a total Argyle-sweep! See below for all flight’s results.

Many thanks are extended to everyone who participated, and congratulations to all!  Special thanks to the generous members and staff of Argyle Country Club for hosting us!
