64th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifying Medalist Kristin Shifflett
Silver Spring, Md. – The Maryland State Golf Association held qualifying for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur at Argyle Country Club on Thursday, July 30. By day’s end, four players earned spots to compete in the 64th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur set to be held at Portland Golf Club this fall.
Kristin Shifflett of Fredericksburg, Va., carded a three-over-par 75 to take home medalist honors and the first qualifying spot. After carding a double bogey, three bogeys, and two birdies on the front nine, she made the turn at three-over. On the back nine, Shifflett carded another double bogey on the 12th hole, but countered it with two additional birdies on the 14th and 18th to finish her round at three-over-par 75.
Sarah Ingram of Nashville, Tenn., secured the second-place finish and second qualifying spot after finishing five shots behind the lead with an eight-over-par 80 round. Ingram remained steady through the front nine with the exception of three bogeys on the 2nd, 3rd, and 9th holes. After making the turn, Ingram carded five more bogeys to finish at eight-over-par 80.
Joan Gardner of Alexandria, Va., claimed the third qualifying spot after finishing her round with a nine-over-par 81. She began the day with a double bogey on the 1st and added three bogeys on the front nine. After she made the turn, Gardner carded four more bogeys to finish the day at third on the leaderboard.
Julie Streng of Greensboro, N.C., took the fourth and final qualifying spot of the day with a 10-over-par 82 finish. Her front nine was filled with a mix of double bogeys, bogeys, and one birdie, allowing her to make the turn at seven-over-par. Streng played more consistently on the back nine, carding only one double bogey and one bogey to guarantee her spot in the 64th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.
Shawn McCullough of Pinehurst, N.C., and Bev Lane of Great Falls, Va., earned the two alternate positions after shooting rounds of 11-over-par 83, but a playoff was held to determine the first-and second-alternate status. After both players carded pars on the first playoff hole, they moved to the par-3 17th, where Lane made double bogey. McCullough claimed the first alternate status, and Lane secured second alternate honors.
After successfully making it through the 18-hole qualifying round at Argyle Country Club, Shifflett, Ingram, Gardner, and Streng set their sights on the 64th U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur at Portland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon, September 26 to October 1.
The MSGA would like to thank the staff and members of Argyle Country Club for their hospitality in hosting this USGA championship qualifier.
