The 2021 Mixed Two-Ball Championship was held on August 12th at Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland. A total of 35 teams competed in the competition for the Championship trophy and an additional 33 teams competed in the Senior Division. The format for this event was select drive and alternate shots, thereafter, also known as greensomes or modified Chapman/Pinehurst, with both gross and net prizes.
Sally Ratcliffe and Trevor Davis from Elkridge Club prevailed in the Championship Division after shooting an impressive one-under-par (71). The team had only two bogeys – one on the challenging par 4, 13th hole, and the other on the lengthy par 5, 16th hole. The team made birdies at the par 4, 6th hole; par 3, 11th hole; and the difficult par 5, 18th hole. Team Ratcliffe and Davis won by one stroke, edging out Sophie Simon and Steve Block from Woodmont Country Club who finished even par, 35-37-(72) Third place went to Mary Leahy and Andrew Mlynarski, from Norbeck Country Club and Links at Perry Cabin, who finished with a score of 74.
In the Senior Division, Howard Stein and Jill Benson from Woodmont Country Club won with a three-over-par round of 75. After finishing runner-up last year, Benson was able to win the Senior Division. This is the second year in a row that Woodmont Country Club members have won the Senior Division at the Mixed Two-Ball Championship. The husband-and-wife duo, Thomas and Carol Kersch, from Eagle’s Nest Country Club, finished in second place with a score of five-over- par round of 78. Sharon Gutschick and Tim Goins, from Mountain Branch Golf Club finished third in the Senior Division with a score of 80.
Despite the heat and humidity in the Baltimore area, the players enjoyed immaculate conditions at Hayfields Country Club. Hayfields provided a great mixture of difficult and fair holes. In the Championship Division, the men played from 6462 yards and the women played from 5329 yards. In the Senior Division, the men played from 6005 yards and the women played from 5167 yards. A total of 55 birdies and 482 pars were made during the event.
