Robert Brownell will be inducted into the Inaugural Class of the Maryland Golf Hall of Fame on April 20th, 2022. In 1936, Brownell won his first D.C. Amateur, defeating Roger Peacock 3&2 at Manor Country Club. Between 1937-1945, Brownell did not compete in the D.C. Amateur because he was attending Duke University, and he worked for the FBI during World War II. Between 1946-1955, he would go on to win every D.C. Amateur, bringing his total to 11 Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur titles. During his 10 consecutive title streak, he would face Ralph Bogart 5 times and win every match. Going into the 1956 D.C. Amateur at Chevy Chase, Brownell had won 53 successive D.C. Amateur matches. In the first round of match play, Brownell would win his first match against William McFerren (due to injury) for his 54th successive victory. In his next match, he would lose to Anthony “Perky” Cullinane on the 20th hole, ending the longest match play victory streak in the history of local, state, and regional amateur golf in the United States.
