Edgewater, Md. – The Maryland State Golf Association hosted its first One-Day event of the season at The Golf Club at South River on Monday, May 18.

Men’s Division

Net Champions
Corey Gates and John Elliott of Swan Point Yacht & Country Club dominated the Net competition, posting birdies on all but four holes during a remarkable 13-under-par 58 performance to win by three strokes.

Gates and Elliott also recorded the day’s lowest Gross score, but under the event payout structure, teams could collect prizes in only one division. The pair accepted first-place Net honors.

Gross Champions
With Gates and Elliott taking Net honors, Brett Burroughs and Dan Escolobio of Swan Point Yacht & Country Club claimed the Men’s Gross title after carding eight birdies en route to an eight-under-par 63.

Mixed/Women’s Division

Per the MSGA’s field-size policy, the Mixed and Women’s divisions were combined into a single Net competition because fewer than four teams competed in each division. The field featured two mixed teams and one women’s team.

Net Champions
Carol Kersch of Eagle’s Nest Country Club and Thomas Kersch of Poor Boys Golf Club earned medalist honors after recording six birdies and an eagle during a five-under-par 66 round.

Mixed Senior Men’s Division

Net Champions
Michael Mulford and Barry Schwartz of Compass Pointe Golf Courses carded nine birdies and an eagle to finish at 10-under-par 61 and capture Net honors.

Gross Champions
Five teams finished tied atop the Gross leaderboard at six-under-par 65, but the tiebreaker favored Lee Weigt and Carlos Sera of The Golf Club at South River. The duo recorded seven birdies during their round.

The event format was 18 holes of Doubles Golf, a two-person scramble in which both players tee off on every hole before selecting the best shot and continuing play from that position until the ball is holed. The committee for MSGA One-Day tournaments uses the USGA-recommended method for breaking ties when a playoff is not feasible, as outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf.

The MSGA would like to thank the staff and membership of The Golf Club at South River for hosting a fantastic day of golf.
