(Lutherville, MD – Dec. 11, 2020) The Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) Board of Directors announced today that W. James Hewatt will become the Association’s Director of Handicapping and Course Rating, effective January 1, 2021.
The MSGA hired Hewatt in 2016 as the Director of Member Services & Tournaments. In this role he provided technical support to MSGA member clubs and individuals for inquiries related to handicapping, course rating, technology and member services. He also conducted all MSGA One-Day events and assisted with administration of MSGA men’s championships and USGA qualifiers. As the Director of Handicapping & Course Rating, Hewatt will manage all aspects of the World Handicap System (WHS) and Course Rating System administered by the Maryland Handicap Program (MHP) on behalf of the MSGA and the Middle Atlantic PGA (MAPGA). He will continue developing strong relationships between the MHP and MSGA membership, which is comprised of more than 150 member clubs and 37,000 golfers in Maryland and Washington D.C.
“I’ve been involved with the MSGA in various ways for almost half of my life;” said Hewatt, “for several years as a junior and amateur golfer competing in MSGA tournaments, as a staff member at the club level, as an intern, and for the past four years as a full-time staff member. The Director of Handicapping & Course Rating position is an excellent opportunity to continue my growth and development as a part of our tremendous team of staff and volunteers. I look forward to providing outstanding support to our member clubs and individual members for services administered by the MHP.”
MSGA Executive Director, Kelly Newland (who begins his new position January 1, 2021), conducted a national search to fill the position beginning in October.
“I am very excited for our Association to have James in this new role,” said Newland. “His administration experience, knowledge and service record to the MSGA makes him an ideal fit for this position. I’m eager to see him advance our handicap program and provide the best in service to our member clubs.”
Before being hired as the Director of Member Services & Tournaments, Hewatt completed a seven-month internship with the MSGA as part of the United States Golf Association’s P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship Program. Prior to the internship, Hewatt worked at the University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park as a tournament coordinator, golf shop staff member and student manager. Hewatt is a graduate from University of Maryland-College Park with a bachelor’s degree in history and currently resides in College Park, MD.
