Hello! My name is Will Horn and I am the 2019 P.J. Boatwright Intern for the MSGA. I am from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania and I am completing my undergraduate studies at York College of Pennsylvania this spring. I am majoring in Sports Management as well as a minor in Human Resources. I attended Elizabethtown Area High School in Lancaster County where I first started playing golf. After picking up a club for the first time you could always find me playing golf or working at the nearest golf course. With my studies in sports management I am looking forward to my work with the MSGA this season and I am excited about what I can bring to this wonderful organization.
How did you hear about the internship with the MSGA?
I found the P.J. Boatwright internship through the position posting on the MSGA website. I thought this opportunity was a great start for me to get into the golf industry and what I want to do in life so I decided to apply.
Why were you interested in an internship with the MSGA?
Besides the passion I have for golf, I wanted to experience something new. Being able to work in a different state with all new courses to see, people to network with, and gaining more knowledge about the golf industry would be a great opportunity for me and really help me out in the future.
What is your favorite golf course in the area?
Since I had to move to Maryland recently, I haven’t been able to play many courses in Maryland. When I was in high school I was apart of the Plantation Junior Golf Tour. While I was on that tour I got to travel to multiple states for tournaments. My favorite course that I played in Maryland has to Maryland National Golf Club. The way the course was built will give any skilled golfer challenges throughout the whole round.
When did you start playing golf? Who got you into the game?
I started playing golf the summer before my freshman year of high school. I knew I wanted to play because my older brother also played at the same school and I wanted to beat his records. So to get me ready my brother started taking me to the driving range to practice my swing. After awhile at the range we started to go to different courses on the weekends to put my skills to the test. At first he would always beat me without a doubt but after all those hours on the range and at the courses by the end of my sophomore year I was finally able to beat him. Without my brother I would of never had the passion for the game of golf that I do now.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
When I am not working I love to be out on the golf course or just hitting at the driving range. When I am not doing anything golf related I am always cheering on my favorite teams that include the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Capitals, and Notre Dame for college football. I also enjoy being outside hiking, fishing, or heading down to the beach at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
What is a fun fact we don’t know about you?
Last spring I had the opportunity to be able to travel to Italy for a sports management class. During this trip we stayed in Milan where we got to watch a soccer game and we also stayed in Rome. While we were in Rome we got to visit and take a tour of the Marco Simone golf course which will be hosting the 2022 Ryder Cup. The most interesting part of the course that stood out to me was a big castle on the course.
About the USGA Boatwright Internship:
In 1991, the USGA established the P.J. Boatwright Internship program, which is designed to give experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration. The internship also assists state and regional golf associations in the promotion of amateur golf. The MSGA is granted a seven month intern, who will work from April through November. The MSGA’s intern helps conduct tournaments, membership services, handicapping, course rating, website administration and other activities to support golf in Maryland.
