Hello, my name is John Salazar, and I am from Gaithersburg, Maryland. I went to Quince Orchard High School, where I played football all four years. Since then, I have attended the University of South Carolina, working towards my bachelor’s degree in Sports and Entertainment Management coupled with a minor in Sports Media. The world of golf is fairly new to me, but something about the sport has called out to me recently, and I am looking forward to truly immersing myself in the game. This Boatwright Internship is my final work experience before receiving my degree, and I look forward to my next seven months here!
Why were you interested in an internship with the MSGA?
The internship with the MSGA interested me because I was looking for an opportunity to get experience in the golf industry in a place where I felt I could learn as much as I could about all aspects of golf administration. The rules also interested me, as there is no better way to learn about a game than to be knowledgeable enough to officiate it. Being back home in Maryland was also an added plus!
When did you start playing golf? Who got you into the game?
My first time playing golf was a little over two years ago, playing a round with my friends in college. It being my round ever, I was, as expected, not very good, and quite frankly still not, but what got me into the game that day was the beautiful scenery/weather and the time spent with friends. My few good hits that went straight made me chase that feeling and the thought of someday perfecting my swing.
What is your favorite golf course in the area?
I do not currently have a favorite golf course in the area because, as crazy as it sounds, I have never played here in Maryland. However, I will get back to you when I can play some courses here! I will say, though, that I have had the opportunity to work the Masters in Agusta for the past two years, and it is a breathtaking place to be—nothing I have experienced so far has compared to it!
What do you like to do when you are not working?
When I am not at work, I enjoy exercising and hanging out with friends as much as possible. Being from Maryland, I am a huge Ravens fan, and whenever I have the chance, I love to go to games and cheer on the team. I also enjoy spending time at the beach when it is sunny and catching a tan with good music and weather!
