Hi Everyone,
My name is Khalil Abrams and I am the 2020 PJ Boatwright Jr. intern for the Maryland State Golf Association. I am absolutely thrilled to have this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to helping every single one of you as we get back to the “new” normal here in these unprecedented times. A little bit of background information on me is that I grew up in Randallstown, Maryland and my family moved to Pennsylvania in October of 2005. My introduction to golf was through The First Tee of Baltimore and Saturday golf clinics at Forest Park with the late, great Tim Sanders. I played on the golf, football, and tennis teams at Susquehannock High School located in Glen Rock, Pennyslvania. Afterwards, I chose to attend Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and majored in Business Administration with a minor in Hospitality and Restaurant Management. At Cheyney, I was on the Dean’s list and received several academic excellence awards throughout my undergraduate years. I recently obtained my bachelor’s degree and plan to pursue my master’s degree in the near future.
How did you hear about the internship with the MSGA?
I heard about the internship through my father who forwarded me an email with details about the position. He thought it would be a great way for me to gain a new perspective on the game of golf and figured I would enjoy it because of my never-ending passion for sports.
Why were you interested in an internship with the MSGA?
My sister Kendel played in numerous MSGA junior and Women’s Amateur tournaments before attending college in South Carolina. I was tasked with driving her to the different courses around Maryland. Those tournaments were really interesting to me at the time because of the number of players as well as what they were competing for. I wanted to learn more about the behind-the-scenes aspect of conducting tournaments.
What is your favorite golf course in the area?
I am a huge fan of Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. There are a lot of great courses in our state. I have yet to play and to see every single one. However, Caves is the first course I enjoyed playing when I first started to routinely play the game in high school.
When did you start playing golf? Who got you into the game?
I started learning the basics of the game in 2008 during Saturday morning golf clinics at Forest Park Golf Course. Tim Sanders groomed me not only on how to hold and grip the club but also learning the different terminology of the game. Mr. Sanders will truly be missed by everyone he touched in the city and surrounding areas of Baltimore, Maryland.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I enjoy cooking, reading, and listening to podcasts/audiobooks. I also love watching DisneyPlus and Netflix with my seven-year-old sister Kyla and helping with her online schoolwork.
What is a fun fact we don’t know about you?
A fun fact about myself is that I’ve met Los Angeles Lakers royalty at various locations, but never in the city of Los Angeles, California. I met the following individuals at the indicated locations: Kobe Bryant at an ESPN Kids in Sports telecast in La Quinta, California; Shaquille O’Neal at a Shaq Vs. telecast (Michael Phelps) in Towson, Maryland; and Earvin “Magic” Johnson at a Ray Lewis’ Summer Days bowling event in Perry Hall, Maryland.
