Lutherville-Timonium, MD – The Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) announced today that it will assume responsibility for specific programs of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association (WMGA) following the WMGA’s recent decision to cease operations.
In 2025, the MSGA will conduct two events that have been mainstays of the WMGA schedule. The first event will be the DC Amateur Championship, originally called the District of Columbia Amateur and most recently the Metropolitan Amateur. It was first held in 1914 and is one of the nation’s oldest amateur golf tournaments. Argyle Country Club will host this year’s championship on August 7, 8, and 9.
The MSGA will also send a team to compete in the Williamson Cup, a junior event held since 1964. The WMGA team is the defending champion. This year’s competition will be held in Quebec in early August.
In addition, the MSGA will add the Frank Emmet Scholarship to its already robust scholarship program. Named after a man many consider to be the father of junior golf, this prestigious scholarship will be awarded annually to a recent high school graduate who embodies the spirit of the game.
The MSGA is committed to ensuring that the WMGA’s rich history, including its past champions and tournament results, remains accessible to the golf community.
“We are deeply grateful to the WMGA for its outstanding contributions to golf,” said Kelly Newland, Executive Director of the MSGA. “We are extremely proud that the WMGA is entrusting us to continue key events and initiatives that shaped its legacy. We are honored to fulfill their wishes and are committed to the continued growth of these prestigious events and the Emmet scholarship.”
MSGA Vice President Mike Hinkey, who chairs the Association’s Tournament & Competitions Committee, said, “We are pleased to add the DC Amateur and Williamson Cup to our championship calendar this year, and are evaluating the possibility of conducting the Summer Team Matches this year and in future years.”
By honoring the legacy of the WMGA and committing to the continued growth of its most historic events, the MSGA aims to enrich golf in our region for current and future generations. We welcome the engagement of the golf community as we work diligently to uphold the values and spirit of the game and continue to foster a vibrant golf culture in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
