Four-Ball Match Play must be a popular format at Manor Country Club in Rockville. The club’s entry was victorious last year in the 89th Men’s State Team Matches, and its senior team added additional hardware after defeating Baltimore Country Club in the 21st installation of the Senior State Team Matches conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association on Sunday, September 13.
Despite close and exciting matches in the preceding rounds, the final contest involved less drama, with Manor emerging as convincing winners 9 1/2 – 2 1/2. The seven-point margin of victory was the largest in a final since 2011, when Congressional defeated Mountain Branch 10-2, and tied for the second largest margin in a final since the event began in 2000. Manor had not reached the final prior to this year.
Manor started with a first-round bye and edged out a victory against Crofton CC by a single point, 6 1/2 – 5 1/2, in the second round. Glen Riddle GC in Berlin was was the only team from the Eastern Shore left in the draw, and Manor drew them in the quarterfinal round. Glen Riddle proved to be a worthy opponent, but Manor outlasted them in a play-off at Glen Riddle after a 6-6 tie. In the semi-final round Manor cruised past Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club by a score 8 1/2 – 3 1/2 before downing BCC for its first Senior State Team Championship title.
Baltimore Country Club made an impressive run to the finals as well with a huge second-round win at Maryland Golf and Country Club by a score of 10-2. BCC then defeated Rolling Road Golf Club 8 1/2 – 3 1/2 in a quarterfinals match and went on to win 8 1/2 to 3 1/2 over Mount Pleasant’s squad in the semi-finals. Defending champion, Congressional, did not compete for the title this year.
