Holly Hills Country Club hosted an MSGA One-Day Four-Ball event on Monday, July 2. The weather was hot and humid with temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees by the afternoon, and the golf course played firm and fast for the 26 teams in the field. This event used a stableford scoring system, in which points are awarded in relation to a fixed score (usually par or net par) at each hole. The objective is to score the highest number of points.

Cattail Creek CC members Ed Simon and Paul Barsotti scored 45 net stableford points to win first net in the Men’s – Back division. They ham-and-egged their way around quite nicely, using Simon’s ball to score on 8 holes and Barsotti’s on 10 holes. Barsotti’s net eagles at the par-3 sixth and the par-4 eleventh proved to be important, as the duo dropped shots on two of their final three holes. Bob Filler, Mount Pleasant GC, and Roman Santana, Clifton Park GC, finished in second net in the back division with 42 points. They used seven net birdies and a net eagle to offset three bogeys on the card.

In the gross contest for the Men’s – Back division, David Lughermo-Larry Siu, both of University of Maryland GC, scored 38 points with four birdies and two bogeys. Lughermo, who won the gross contest in the same division last month at Crofton CC, made three of the team’s four birdies, while Siu picked the team up with a birdie at the par-5 fifth. Al Montgomery of Wicomico Shores GC and Howard Cunningham, Clustered Spires GC, took second place gross in the same division after tying Simon-Barsotti for second gross with 34 points.

Jim Loreto and Ralph Swartwood, also of University of MD GC, were the victors of the Men’s – Forward division net contest. They managed to not give any shots back and made eleven net birdies and a net eagle at the challenging par-4 fifteenth (famously dubbed the toughest hole in Western civilization) on their way to 49 a point total. Derek Kromm, MSGA eClub, and Rob Yunker, P.B. Dye GC tied Ron Brown, Jr. and Zac Beres for second net, with 44 points. MSGA staff broke the tie using the USGA recommended tiebreaker, and Kromm-Yunker had 21 points to Beres-Brown’s 20 points on the back nine.

Bretton Woods GC members Tom Duvall and Nicholas Krafft took first gross in the forward division with 34 points. They were steady throughout the day with two birdies and two bogeys. Their major hiccup came at the par-5 thirteenth, when they were forced to score a double-bogey for the team as both players carded seven. Fortunately for them it was not a decisive mistake. Second gross went to Jim Young II of Beaver Creek and Bob Berlinsky, Maryland National GC, one point behind Duvall and Krafft with 33 points.

Between the four mixed and women’s (3 mixed, 1 women), Tom Kersch, Poor Boys GC, and his wife Carol Kersch, Pine Ridge GC, won first net with 40 points that included a net eagle from Carol at the par-4 seventeenth. The Kerschs scored 28 points in gross, but teams are only eligible to win one prize, so MSGA eClub members Sue and Talbot Daley’s 27 point-total was enough to win the gross contest.
