The 17th Mid-Atlantic Junior Girls’ Challenge Matches, an annual competition where Maryland and Virginia juniors take on North and South Carolina, was held at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club in Kilmarnock, VA this past weekend, July 28-29 2018. The girls representing Maryland were:
- Julia Calomiris (Congressional Country Club)
- Amanda Levy (Woodmont Country Club)
- Sophie Simon (Woodmont Country Club)
- Jenny Hua (MSGA eClub)
On Saturday, the format of four-ball match play allowed the Carolinas team to take a 3-1 advantage on the first day of the Mid Atlantic Girls’ Challenge. Julia Calomiris and Becca DiNunzio (VA) took their match 2&1 to earn 1 point for Virginia/Maryland.
On the second day of competition format was individual match play, and the Virginia/Maryland team won the three of the first four matches, as Becca DiNunzio of Virginia, Julia Calomiris, and Amanda Levy of Maryland won their matches to even the score at 4 points a side. After splitting the 5th and 6th matches, with one win for each side, the cup came down to the final two matches on the course. Virginia/Maryland needing 1.5 points to earn the cup and Carolinas only needing 1 to retain the cup in a tie gave them a slight advantage. Jenny Hua earned the 6th point for Virginia/Maryland with a clutch 5-foot putt on the 18th hole. In the final match, Carolinas Emily Hawkins earned the 6th point with a 3&2 victory which allowed the Carolinas to retain the cup in an exciting 6-6 tie.
