SILVER SPRING, Md. – Drew Carlin, a junior at the University of Richmond, carded seven birdies and one bogey to shoot a 6-under-par 66, earning medalist honors at the 125th U.S. Open Local Qualifier held Monday, May 5, at Northwest Golf Course in Silver Spring, Maryland.
With seven qualifying spots and two alternate spots up for grabs, the morning wave teed off under clear skies and fair weather. As morning turned to afternoon, rain began to fall, causing a delay and pushing a playoff to early Tuesday morning.
Logan Reilly of Lovettsville, Virginia, and Hayden Miller of Leesburg, Virginia, earned the second and third spots by shooting 5-under-par 67 to advance to final qualifying. Reilly, a high school senior, has committed to play golf at Auburn University. Last year, he won the Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship and the State Open of Virginia. Miller, a recent Radford University graduate who recently turned professional, made two eagles and two birdies on his final four holes to secure his spot.
Nick Barrett of Catonsville, Maryland, and Boyi (Barry) Zhang of Winter Garden, Florida, each carded a 4-under-par 68 to claim the fourth and fifth spots. Barrett competed in the 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur last year at Kinloch Golf Club, reaching the Round of 32. Zhang, a freshman at Harvard University, is coming off a T-26 finish at the Ivy League Men’s Championship.
With five spots secured, a playoff—delayed by weather and prompted by an incoming storm—was held Tuesday morning to determine the final two qualifying spots and two alternate positions. Kevin Johnson, Samuel Espinosa-Trueba, and Paul Chang began the playoff on No. 10, with all three making par. They repeated the result on the second playoff hole, No. 18. Returning to the 10th, Espinosa-Trueba made a birdie to earn the sixth spot, and Johnson made par to claim the seventh. Chang made a bogey, securing the first alternate spot.
Jackson Roman and Steve Delmar were the only two players to show for the second alternate playoff. After five holes, Roman birdied the 18th to earn the second alternate spot.
Final qualifying for the 125th U.S. Open will occur May 19 and June 2 at various locations. The championship will be held at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., June 12–15.
