Sarah Spicer Interview
Bethesda, Md – Kenwood Golf and Country Club hosted the 57th Maryland Women’s Senior Amateur and the 18th Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur. The Women’s Senior Amateur tournament took place over two rounds from August 27 to 28, while the Women’s Mid-Amateur was played in a single round on August 28.
This is the fifth time Kenwood G & C.C. has hosted the Women’s Senior Amateur tournament. The 2025 edition of the Women’s Senior tournament again features two rounds of golf after a brief one-year stint with just one round.
Maryland Women’s Senior Amateur
Round one of the Women’s Senior Amateur featured last year’s champion and runner-up jockeying for position at the top of the leaderboard. This time around, it was 2024 runner-up Mary Leahy of Norbeck Country Club who secured the upper hand, finishing her round with a score of 8-over-par 79. The score secured Leahy the top spot on the leaderboard heading into round two. Three strokes behind Leahy in the second-place position was 2024 champion Bev Lane of Congressional Country Club with a score of 11-over-par 82.
2023 runner-up Arlene Zamora of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club and Elina Yim of USGA/Maryland-DC GC tied for the third-place spot on the leaderboard. The two finished just a stroke behind Lane with a score of 12-over-par 83. Rounding out the top five after round one with a score of 13-over-par 84 was Qin Zhang of Lakewood Country Club.
In round two, Zhang made a move up the leaderboard, jumping three spots into a tie with the defending champion, Bev Lane. Zhang carded a 7-over-par 78 in her second round, which gave her an overall score of 162. Lane finished her second round with a score of 9-over-par 80 to also finish with an overall score of 162. Zhang held the tiebreaker, which was broken by a scorecard playoff using the USGA-recommended rules for breaking ties as outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf.
Using a consistent performance over her two rounds, Mary Leahy secured the 57th Maryland Women’s Senior Amateur title. Leahy finished her second round with a score of 7-over-par 78 and topped it off with a birdie on her final hole. Leahy finished the tournament with an overall score of 157.
Leahy jokingly credited her recent retirement for playing a part in her victory. “I retired two weeks ago, so I think the relaxation is good,” Leahy said with a grin. “I just tried to hit the ball in the middle and make pars.”
“It feels amazing. Really, really great,” Leahy described when asked about how it felt to win the Maryland Women’s Senior Amateur title. “We had two really great days at Kenwood. We just had a really awesome event.”

Maryland Women’s Senior Amateur 70+ Division
In the 70 and up division in the Maryland Women’s Senior Amateur, Ellen Schiller of Talbot Country Club claimed the victory, tallying a total score of 174 over her two rounds. Katherine Martin of Breton Bay Golf & Country claimed the second-place spot with a total score of 179. Following Martin, Maggie Brady of Congressional Country Club finished in third place with a total score of 182, and Kay Kim of the University of Maryland Golf Course finished fourth with a total score of 196.
Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur
The 18th Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur saw former champions vying for the title, but ultimately they would come up short. Kelly Strickland of MSGA eClub finished her round with a score of 10-over-par 80 to cap off the top five. Next on the leaderboard in the fourth place spot was Amy Kucera of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, finishing with a score of 7-over-par 77.
Defending champion Mia Zanghetti of MSGa eClub and back-to-back champion from 2022-2023 Elisabeth Herzfeld Rice of Clustered Spires Golf Club each tallied a score of 6-over-par 76 to finish in the third and second-place spots. However, it would be Sarah Spicer of Argyle Country Club who would claim the 18th Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur title. Spicer tallied three birdies on her way to a score of 3-over-par 73 and a women’s mid-amateur title.
“It was good, but it was an interesting round,” Spicer said when asked to describe her round. “I think the key for me today was just staying in it mentally and reminding myself it’s not the easiest course, and everybody’s got to play it.”
The MSGA would like to thank the membership and staff at Kenwood Golf and Country Club for their hospitality this week.
