The 2018 One-Day event schedule concluded with a Chapman tournament at Hillendale CC, Wednesday, October 24. With temperatures below 50 degrees at 9:00 AM, scattered clouds, and wind around 10 mph with gusts up to 17 mph, the 26 teams playing in the event were layered up from head to toe and ready to brave the conditions.
In the Chapman format golfers compete in teams of two, each partner plays from the teeing ground and plays the partner’s ball for the second shot. After the second shot, the partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play the ball alternately to complete the hole.
Tim and Robert Brewer, both from Rattlewood GC, posted the low net score of the day in either of the men’s divisions when they finished 82-17–65 to take 1st net in the Forward division. They managed to play the front 9 bogey-free with three net birdies before giving a shot back at the par-4 tenth. Fortunately, they rebounded from their bogey with five net birdies (hole nos. 11-12 and 15-17) on their last 8 holes, highlighted by a natural birdie 2 at the par-3 fifteenth, for a 2-shot victory margin.
The next closest team finished at 67 but already won 1st gross, so 2nd net went to James Bawgus and Jeff Corey from Mountain Branch GC. Bawgus-Corey had dipped to -7 through 15 holes after turning at 2-under, but a double bogey at the sixteenth and a bogey at the seventeenth derailed their chances of catching the Brewers. The final spot paid out in the forward division came down to a tiebreaker between Crofton CC members Terry Blanton-Ed Tafoya and MSGA eClub members Zac and Patrick Beres, who each posted 2-under par 70 for their net total. The USGA recommended method was used to break the tie, which resulted in Blanton-Tafoya capturing 3rd net by edging Beres-Beres on the back nine by two shots.
1st gross in the Forward division went to Montgomery CC members Donald Meyer and Dale Williams, who posted 37-38–75 for a 3-over par total. They made three bogeys and one double bogey throughout the round but offset their mistakes with birdies at hole nos. 2 and 11 to win by three shots over Mike Shaver, Hillendale CC, and Harry Spector, Cattail Creek CC.
Shaver-Spector started off smoothly with a 1-under start through five holes, but bogeys at hole nos. 7 and 8 dropped them back to +1, and their struggles on the back nine led to a total of 37-41–78. 3rd gross went to Ed Palguta, Musket Ridge GC, and Russ Stoneman, University of Maryland GC, whose improvement on the back nine helped them post 44-40–84. Palguta-Stoneman actually posted the sixth lowest gross total in the division, but all teams ahead of them were awarded net prizes.
The 1st net prize in the Men’s – Back division was decided by a tiebreaker as well. Mountain Branch GC members David Sell-Scott Hudson and MSGA eClub members Jeff Cheatwood-Jeff Corby tied for low net with 37-34–71. Both teams tied on the back nine with net 34, but Sell-Hudson played the final six holes two shots better than Cheatwood-Corby, who finished in 2nd net by way of the tiebreaker.
Mark Coburn, Hunt Valley CC, and Jeff Dwyer, Greystone GC, teamed up to produce the low gross total in the Back division with 40-38–78. They were also 1-under through five holes before consecutive double bogeys at hole nos. 6 and 7 dropped them back to +3, but they played steadily on the back nine to defeat Cheatwood-Corby by one stroke. Due to Cheatwood-Corby already winning 2nd net, Compass Pointe GC members Bill Boling-Joe Lambert posted 42-40–82 to earn 2nd gross.
