Rainy, overcast conditions did not stop Chris Burns and Randy Grooman from producing an excellent round of net 58 (-14) on Monday, July 30 at Prospect Bay CC. Playing in their third One-Day event of the season, the pairing from Glen Dale Golf Club and Hampshire Greens, respectively, used twelve net birdies and two net eagles to offset one bogey on each side on their way to a stunning 8-shot margin of victory over the nearest competitors in the Men’s – Forward division.
Second net in the forward division was a three-way tie at 66 between Mark Budd-Dennis Olson, Guy Cherry-Greg Gruber, and David James-Bill Wick. Budd-Olson of Redgate Golf Course emerged victorious from the scorecard tiebreaker, as the committee used the USGA recommended tiebreaker method of matching cards with the back nine total and then the combined total from the last six holes to determine the winner.
Burns-Groooman’s gross score of 1-under 71 was also the low gross round in their division, but teams are only eligible to win one prize. First place gross went to Guy Cherry and Greg Gruber from Queenstown Harbor Golf Links, who produced a 1-over round of 36-37–73. Second gross in the Men’s Forward division went to frequent One-Day players from U.S. Naval Academy GC, Barry Andrews and Craig Whitaker, who went out at even par, but bogeys coming in at holes 11, 13, and 16 led to a 3-over total of 36-39–75.
Bill Boling and Joe Lambert of Compass Pointe fired a net 7-under 31-34–65 to take first place in the Men’s – Back division. took advantage of the par fives with birdies at all but the 516 yard 18th. James Ciganek and Matt Matthias of Queenstown Harbor Golf Links took home the low gross prize in the back division after tying with Boling and Lambert with gross scores of 1-over 73.
The next One-Day event will be at Argyle Country Club on Monday, August 27.
