The Maryland State Golf Association-Women’s Division will conduct the 98th Women’s Amateur Championship from Monday, July 22nd to Thursday, July 25th at Norbeck Country Club in Phoenix. The Championship begins with
an optional 18-hole stroke play qualifying round for the Championship Flight. The low 16 players form the Championship flight and will be seeded by their qualifying round score. All players who do not qualify for the Championship Flight are divided into flights of eight players and are seeded according to their most current handicap indexes. Match play begins on Tuesday. Those defeated in the first match of the Championship flight will form the First Flight. Final matches for all flights will be on Thursday. The qualifying round will play 5,747 yards as well as the Championship to Fourth Flights. The Fifthh Flight will play 5,426 yards.
Norbeck Country Club was designed by Alfred H. Tull and was first opened for play in 1954. With its gently rolling fairways and small greens, Norbeck Country Club is one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. Norbeck Country Club is respected as a fine test to any skilled golfer, having hosted many prominent events over the past 60 years.
Defending champion Delaney Shah, MSGA eClub, will compete to defend her title in the Amateur Championship. As the defending champion, Delaney earned the #1 seed in the Championship flight. Delaney was also runner-up in the 2017 Amateur Championship and is looking to defend her title this year. A senior in the fall at the University of Louisville, Delaney has been adding new achievements to her golf resume each year. The 2017 champion, Clare Connolly, will also be in the field this year to compete for the title. Connolly beat Shah in the 2017 Maryland Amateur, so it will be great to see these two fight for the title.
Other notable players in this year’s Women’s Amateur field include two-time runner-up Lisa Schlesinger. Lisa Schlesinger is a four-time Maryland Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion as well as the 2013 Maryland Senior Champion. A past champion that will be in the field is Aneka Seumanutafa who won the Women’s Amateur back in 2015. Another contender for the championship this year is Lisa Kaufman who won the 2018 Women’s Mid-Amateur and was this years runner-up in the same event. Along the veterans in the field there are a handful of college stars looking to take the crown this year. We have Joanna Keck (JMU), Julia Calomiris (Towson), Jordan Cornelius (Towson), Lena Capoccia (University of MD), Charlotte Lafourcade (University of MD), and the defending champion Delaney Shah (Louisville).
The Maryland Women’s Amateur is open to female amateur golfers that are members of MSGA member clubs with a handicap index of 30.0 or less as of June 15, 2019.
