The teams of Tom Grem-James Grem and Jeffrey Amrhein-Tim Elliot, competing in the men’s back and forward divisions, respectively, were atop the leaderboard following a One-Day Four-Ball tournament conducted by the Maryland State Golf Association on Monday, September 12th at Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club.
Scott and Leland Seyfferth posted a team net score of 64 (-8) in the men’s back division. With five net birdies and three net eagles, the duo was able to shoot six-under on the back to help them capture first place and win the net prize.
With the Seyfferths’ earning the low net prize, the father-son duo Tom and James Grem won low gross with a round of 67 (-5). The pair had a clean scorecard with no bogeys and five birdies. They won the scorecard playoff against Munnelly-Faudale by one shot for first place gross.
Craig Ostrom and Rafae Iqbal earned second place (gross) in the men’s back division with 35-33-68 (-4). Thomas Munnelly and Carlo Faudale finished in second place (net) with a score of 32-32-64 (-8), including six birdies (four gross and two net) and one net eagle. Twenty-one teams registered to compete in the Men’s Back division and played from the white tees measuring 6,008 yards.
The duo of David Cannon and Joe Kurdziel were able to post a net score of 60 (-12) to win 1st place net in the men’s forward division. The duo of Robert King and Tim Yee posted a net score of 63 (-9). Jim Atkinson and Tom Ralph Swartwood carded a 65 (-7) to finish 3rd place net. Jeffrey Amrhein and Tim Elliott were able to post a score of 66 (-6) to earn first place gross. Angelo Catucci and Joey Tominovich made four birdies to finish second place gross. Daniel Hastings and James Dempsey finished 3rd place gross posting a score of 39-32-71. They edged Len Moyer and Tim Kowalchick in a scorecard playoff by shooting 32 on the back nine, while Moyer-Kowalchick shot a 37 on the back nine. Nineteen teams registered to compete in the Men’s Forward division and played from the gold tees measuring 5,431 yards.
In the Mixed/Women’s division, Ashley and Russell earned first place (net) prize with an eight-under-par (64). Two net eagles helped secure the first-place finish for the Stoneman’s. Bob and Kimbra Benson were able to shoot 69 (-3). The four birdies gave the Benson’s a good lead to hold off the rest of the division. The men played from the gold tees measuring 5,431 yards, while the women played from the green tees measuring 5,020 yards.
The committee for MSGA One-Day tournaments uses the USGA recommended method for breaking ties when a playoff is not feasible, outlined in Committee Procedures 5A(6) of the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf.
The format for the 48 teams was Four-Ball stroke play, often called better-ball. In Four-Ball, Competitors play as partners, with each playing their own ball. The lower score for the partners is the score for the hole. If a player is confident that their score will not count on a particular hole, they are not required to finish the hole, but one team member must hole out.
