On Thursday, July 21st, the 81st Father-Son Championship and the first ever Parent-Child Championship was held at The Preserve at Eisenhower in Crownsville. The Father-Son featured the best ball format, while the Parent-Child saw a modified alternate shot format. Both players would hit their drive, pick the better drive and play alternate shot from there.
In the Parent-Child, the low round of the day was 73, 2-over-par, shot by Greg and John Wampler as well as Roy and Allan Phillips. The Wampler’s shot a 35-38 with a birdie on the first to start their day off on the right note. The Phillips’s shot a 36-37 with a birdie on the front nine and a birdie on the back nine.
In the Father-Son, Aaron and Clive Williams of Woodholme CC were able to come out with the victory. The duo was able to record a 5-under-par, 32-34-66. The pair was off to a great start with four birdies on the front. Heading to the back nine, the team started well until they bogeyed the par-three 13th. However, Aaron made up for it as he eagled the 546-yard par-five 16th. Clive went on to add another birdie to the card on the par-three 17th and finished with a par on the 18th.
Last year’s champions, Charlie and Tom Winegardner, were the first group off the tee. The duo was able to record four birdies on the front but not before having two bogeys to bring their front nine score to 33. Heading to the back nine, the reigning champs bogeyed the par-five 12th but followed it up with two birdies on the next two holes. However, their efforts were enough to remain champions as they finished three strokes off the lead at 2-under-par.
David and Pete Regala recorded a bogey-free round on the day. The duo from Chartwell G&CC were able to turn in a clean scorecard with two birdies on the front and two birdies on the back. However, their impressive performances was not enough to win them the tournament as they were one stroke shy of the Williams.
