Manor Country Club and Mount Pleasant Golf Course produced almost identical
scores in winning area titles in the annual Maryland State Golf Association team
match competition, April 20. Manor, in the final for the first time since
winning a fourth title in 1971, stopped Columbia CC, 14-4, and Mount Pleasant,
the first municipal entry to reach the final, defeated Crofton CC, 14 1/2 – 3
1/2.
Manor handled Columbia, a record 12-time champion, by scoring seven of a
possible nine points at home and away. Brandon Cigna and Vincenzo Saline-Amorir
at home and Bart Mease-Alex Taylor and Ben Warnquist-Dave Tacchetti at Columbia
had the sweeps.
Mount Pleasant, which has scored at least 13 points in winning four of its five
matches (the other was a 9 1/2-8 1/2 decision against Piney Branch), won five of
its six pairings, three of them sweeps. Taking care of that were pro Brian
Meyer-Mike Filler and Brendan McKinney-Dave Frisch at home and Ben Shields-Ray
Sheedy at Crofton. The only winning team for Crofton was the home pairing of
Gary Carpenter-Scott Falatach, 2-1, against Vince Shifflett-Blair Laubach.
At Mount Pleasant, the Crofton team of Scott Truff-Kyle McCulluch got the club’s
only point away when they won the 15th and 17th holes to win the back against
Brett Keller-Billy Wingerd. Keller-Wingerd had two birdies apiece in winning the
front and, eventually, the match.
Meyer-Filler won the front 5 up, and the back, 3 up. Each had a birdie on the
back and Filler won the 14th when he got up-down with a 30-yard pitch to five
feet. McKinney got his side a point with a birdie at the ninth and two more with
birds at the 11th and 17th.
Manor will be the home team, with pros Greg Pieczynski and Brian Meyer playing
at the Rockville course. The starting time at each site will be 12:30 p.m.
