Manor Country Club won four of the six matches and with identical 5-4 wins home and away managed to subdue Mount Pleasant Golf Course, 10-8, for the overall championship of the 89th men’s team championship of the Maryland State Golf Association, April 27.

Each side had two 3-0 sweeps and Manor collected a pair of 2-1 decisions from its two middle teams.

Mount Pleasant’s top two teams swept at home and away, with Tim Elliott-Mike Filler winning at home and pro Brian Meyer-Will Shriver winning away. For Manor, it was its closers that brought home the victory, as Ben Warnquist-Tim Meinhardt earned the shutout at home and Brandon Cigna-Vincenzo Amorini away.

With the first two pairings finished at both sites, plus Manor’s one point for the front nine at each spot, the Rockville entry trailed 8-6, but back-nine and overall points secured the triumph.

The victory was Manor’s fifth in the series, joining previous titlists from 1934, 1960-61, and 1971. With the public courses eligible for the event for only the last dozen years or so, Mount Pleasant has fielded an entry six times, with its best previous showing in 2012, when it defeated Sparrows Point and Hillendale before losing to Mountain Branch in the third round.

This time, on their way to the final, Manor defeated Montgomery CC, University of Maryland GC, Hawthorne GC, Beaver Creek CC, and Columbia , and Mount Pleasant defeated Eagle’s Nest G&CC, Piney Branch GC, Rolling Road GC, Maryland G&CC, and Crofton CC.
