This week marks the beginning of the 98th Maryland State Golf Association Amateur Championship, which is being held at the challenging par 70 Chevy Chase Club in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The Championship will run from June 6th through June 9th. This year will be the fourth time Chevy Chase has hosted the Maryland Amateur Championship, last hosting ten years ago in 2009.
Morgan Egloff, from Chevy Chase Maryland, will look to defend his Amateur Championship title this week at his home course. Egloff will also be competing in a stacked field at the Maryland Open Championship at Worthington Manor on July 15-17.
Zachary Barbin, from the 2018 Amateur semi-finals will look to build off his strong playing from last year and try to secure his first Amateur Championship victory this year. Another player gunning for the Amateur Championship is two time Champion Ben Warnquist. Warnquist was knocked out in the semi-finals by Joey Rice last year to end his hopes of being a back-to-back Amateur Champion.
There were four qualifiers for the Amateur, the first at Piney Branch on April 29th, where Carlo Pizzano, Michael Mulieri, and Nick Barrett all carded 72’s to lead the field. On May 9th at Mountain Branch, Austin Barbin and Brett Williams earned the top qualifying spot for the Amateur with an impressive 2-under par, 70. The third qualifier held at CC at Woodmore on May 16th was led by a score of 2-under par by Richard W. Holland. At the final qualifier on May 23rd at Queenstown Harbor Jong Kim, Will Ford, and Phillip Fenstermaker all took the top spot with an outstanding 2-under par 70 on the day.
The Maryland Amateur is open to any amateur golfer with a USGA handicap index of 7.1 or less, who is a member of an MSGA member club. An entry of 390 golfers in the Amateur Championship has been narrowed down by means of four qualifying rounds to a final field of 132 golfers, which includes 33 exempt players. On Thursday, a stroke-play qualifying round will be played for a chance at 31 spots in the match play field, with the defending champion automatically qualifying.
Live scoring will be available during the match play rounds on Friday through Sunday.
Pairings, starting times and scoring are available here.
