Rick and Andrew Sovero, the first group off the tee in the 79th Father-Son championship of the Maryland State Golf Association, wasted no time in setting a target score for the other 41 teams at the Country Club of Maryland. The Rolling Road Golf Club pair shot 30-31–61 to tie a record set last year by Tom and Jimmy Grem at Argyle Country Club.
The round over a 6,464-yard, par-70 course featured four birdies apiece and a 268-yard eagle-2 at No.12 by Rick. A bogey at the 14th marred the otherwise superb effort. It was the their third MSGA title, as they had won in 2009 with 69 at Prospect Bay, a par-72 course, and 2011 with 66 at Rolling Road, a par-70. They also won a Middle Atlantic Golf Association title in 2011 with a 64 at Fountain Head CC, another par-70 course.
Three-time winners Tom and Charlie Winegardner, from the Cannon Club, followed at 65. They shot 35-30, with two birdies, two bogeys on the front and five birdies (Nos. 11-15) on the back, with Tom accounting for three and Charlie, two. Pat and Ryan Richardson, from Mountain Branch GC, put up 66, to edge George and Paul Mavrikes, from Congressional CC, and Bill and George Shenas, from the Cannon Club, tied for fourth at 67.
The net leaders were Robert and Ryan Rehman, University of Maryland GC, and Tim-Alex Talbot, Glenn Dale GC, who tied for first at 65. There was a four-way tie for second at 66 among Edward Walsh, from Caves Valley GC, and Ryan Walsh, from Hunt Valley Country Club; Greg and John Wampler, from MSGA eClub; Mike and Jake Patrick, GC at South River, and Rand Mendez, from Greystone GC and Will Mendez, Fieldstone GC.
