Another State Golf Tournament has come to scintillating finish as the team from Marriotts Ridge posted their 6th overall and consecutive state title in Class 2A/1A while the Class 4A/3A Walt Whitman team secured their 7th state title but first in the past ten years. The Championship was played at the University of Maryland Golf Course on October 24-25, 2017.

Sherwood’s Brad Riley won the Boys Class 4A/3A Individual title with a tournament best 74/71 for a total of 145 and a two-stroke cushion while David Stephens from Marriotts Ridge won the Boys Class 2A/1A Individual title with a 75/78 for a one-stroke win over three competitors at 153.  North Point’s Bailey Davis topped all females and finished with a 146 (71/75) to take first place in the Class 4A/3A Girls Individual competition by three strokes.

Faith McIlvain cruised to the 1A/2A girls state championship individual title with a two-day score of 147 (71-76), which put her 11 shots ahead of second-place Taylor Judge of Kent Island. David Stephens then completed the sweep by winning the 1A/2A boys individual state title by one shot over a trio of players following a two-round total of 153 (75-78).

McIlvain had her most decisive shots during the first few holes of round one. The Marriotts Ridge sophomore opened her state tournament by birding three of her first five holes and after that point no golfer in the classification got any closer than five shots of the lead.

“Playing two-day tournaments is always challenging because it is hard to keep that momentum going and I definitely felt really good after [the first day]. So that was the challenge today to be able to not think about being in the lead and still play my game,” McIlvain said. “Overall, I think I could have done probably a few shots better, but I was still very happy with how I played. I hit a lot of good shots and I finished strong.”
