AnPhi Le wins the 100th Maryland State Women’s Amateur

The 100th Maryland State Women’s Amateur Championship was held at The Elkridge Club in Baltimore July 19-22, 2021.  The Elkridge Club also hosted the very first Maryland State Women’s Amateur Championship in 1921, so having the event at Elkridge was very special.  Both the course and the weather were spectacular for the field of forty participants.

The four day tournament started with a stroke play round on Monday to determine which sixteen players would compete in the championship flight.  Irene Kim, winner of the Maryland State Junior Girls’ Championship held in earlier in the month was our medalist, carding an impressive even par round of 70 on the 5800 yard course.

The field was divided into five flights to compete in match play over the next three days, with AnPhi Le being crowned the 100th Maryland State Women’s Amateur Champion, defeating Helen Yeung in the final, 4 and 2.  Anphi Le was runner up in the 2020 Women’s Amateur Championship held at The Club at P.B. Dye, falling to Jordan Cornelius in the final.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to all!  Special thanks to the members and the staff of The Elkridge Club for who were wonderful hosts!

Highlights of the final matches are as follows:

Championship Flight: AnPhi Le over Helen Yeung 4 and 2

AnPhi and Helen continued to play impressive golf during the final match, with the lead going back and forth through the first 8 holes.  AnPhi then birdied 9, to make the turn at 1 up.  She continued strong with another birdie at 10.  AnPhi took a 3 up lead by winning 12, and then birdied 16 to win the match 4 and 2.

First Flight: Julia Calomiris over Sophie Simon 3 and 2

Julia started strong with a birdie on 1, but Sophie quickly answered with a birdie on 3 to square the match.  Julia went ahead on the 7th hole and held the lead until 12, where Sophie won with a par.  Julia answered with an impressive shot on 14 to within 4 feet to make birdie, and then drained a 60 foot putt on 15 for another bird.  She was able to close out the match on 16, winning 3 and 2.

Second Flight: Elizabeth Tucci over Megan Kirkpatrick 4 and 3

Megan took a 1 up lead on 3, and then Elizabeth evened the match with a birdie on 5.  Megan stiffed a shot on 6 from the 7th fairway for par to go 1 up, but Elizabeth responded with birdies on 7 and 8 to take a one shot lead at the turn.  Elizabeth continued strong on the back, winning 10 and 11, with Megan fighting back with a win on 12.  Elizabeth had wins on 14 and 15, completing the match 4 and 3.

Third Flight: Alana Alexander-Giles over Donna Woodruff 5 and 3

Both Alana and Donna brought their A game to their final match, but it was Alana’s distance off the tee that proved to be insurmountable.  Alana took the lead early in the match with pars on 3 and 4.  Donna quickly evened the match with pars on 6 and 7.  Unfortunately Donna’s putter did not cooperate on 8 and 9, and Alana was able to win those holes to take a 2 up lead at the turn.   Alana then played holes 10 through 15 in even par, closing out the match 5 and 3.

Fourth Flight: Julianna Ishii over Consuelo Ochoa 1 up

Julianna and Consuelo played a very close match on the front 9, staying within one of each other through 9 holes.  Julia birdied 7 to win the hole, and Consuelo parred 8 and 9 to take a one up lead at the turn.  Consuelo took a 2 up lead by winning 10, but Julia came back by winning 11. Consuelo won 14 to restore her 2 hole lead, but Julianna was able to even the match with wins on 15 and 16.  Julia won the 18th hole to take the match 1 up.
