Stephen Baxter, from the National Golf Club at Tantallon, and Jacob Pilarski, from Waverly Woods Golf Club, despite having two of the lowest handicaps in the A Division, earned low net with a 66 and claimed one of the top prizes in the September 7 MSGA One-Day event at Norbeck Country Club.

Baxter, stationed at U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, was recently assigned there from Colorado and this marked the first time the two had played together in this event. Pilarski, from Laurel, however, qualified for this year’s MSGA Amateur, then lost in a playoff for the final two places in the draw.

Pilarski, with an index of +1.8, highlighted his round with a chip-in birdie at the ninth and the team went on to finish with a gross of 68, but, with the event emphasis on net play, they were awarded that prize. Baxter carries a 3.4 index. Second net went to Al Montgomery, Wicomico Shores GC, and Phillip Moseley, MSGA eClub, with 67.

Low gross in the Men’s A division went to Grayson Hanes, Congressional CC, and Chris Miller, Manor CC, with a 71.

Tim Clarkin and Frank Denevan, from the University of Maryland Golf Club, split the better-ball honors about evenly as they used their handicaps (11.9 and 7.1, respectively) to carve out a net 59 to lead the B Division. They were challenged by Rattlewood GC’s Tim Brewer-Patrick Normyle, each of whom had a net eagle in route to second net of 60.

Low gross in the Men’s B division produced the widest margin, as Tom Clements-Joe Lefavor, from the U.S. Naval Academy, shot 66 to lead Dan Allen-Jim Young,II, Beaver Creek CC, who posted 70.

With one prize available in the Women’s Division (prizes were based on the size of the fields), Esther Cohen and Stephanie Hecht took low net with 60. Both women have handicaps in the 20’s, and they took advantage of getting two strokes on some of the holes. Hecht recorded net eagles at No. 8 and No. 11, for instance, as each of the 450-yard holes was played as a par-5.

The Rockville course was played as a par 72 for all divisions, with A playing to a length of 6,487 yards; B to 6,042, and the Women, 5,452.

The final event of the year will be played October 20 at the Suburban Club in Pikesville.
