The 2016 Maryland State Golf Association – Women’s Division’s Annual Luncheon was held at the Country Club of Maryland on Friday, November 4th.  A total of 61 people attended including past MSGA-WD Presidents and Executive Committee members, representatives from the MSGA Board and USGA, MSGA staff, delegates, course raters, other organization and club representatives, tournament hosts, and past award winners.

Every other year the Maryland State Golf Association – Women’s Division recognizes an individual who has made an extraordinary contribution to golf in Maryland.  This year the Executive Committee selected Jean Mulcahey, a choice overwhelmingly supported by the general membership.

Married to husband, Don, for 47 years, Jean has a B.A. in Mathematics and worked in information technology for the federal government and the private sector until 2007.  In addition to golf she enjoys most outdoor activities, with horses being a lifelong passion.  Jean has been a member of Hillendale Country Club, Eagles’ Nest Country Club, and the Country Club of Maryland, having several areas of responsibility at these three clubs over a 44-year span.

She served on our Executive Committee from 2001-2009 and has served as our Rules Chair since 2004.  As the Rules Chair, not only has she been the Head Rules Official at many of our championships, but she also has been in charge of organizing the annual one-day Rules Seminar sponsored by the Women’s Division.

Not only has Jean dedicated her time to the Women’s Division, she has volunteered at the local, regional and national level.  Locally she has been involved with the Women’s Golf Association of Baltimore, serving on their Board from 1977-1983.  Since 2012 she has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association. Within the mid-Atlantic region, she has worked as a Rules Official for the LPGA, MSGA, Middle Atlantic PGA, NCAA Special Olympics of Maryland, and the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls’ Tour, to name a few.  At the national level, Jean has been very involved in the United States Golf Association, first serving on the USGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Committee from 2007-2013 and is now serving on the USGA Women’s Committee.  Her rules knowledge and expertise have allowed her the opportunity to referee at over 30 prestigious USGA competitions, including the Curtis Cup, the U.S. Open, the U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, the U.S. Amateur, the U. S Women’s Amateur, U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, U.S. Girls’ Junior and the USGA Women’s State Team.

Pat Kaufman, Jane Mason, Stasia Collins, Emily DiCicco (via letter), Marilyn Snight, and Melly Tucker all spoke warmly of Jean, praised her accomplishments, and recounted fond memories.
