Dawson Stump, President of the Maryland State Golf Association in 1964 died at 86 on August 13, 2014. Dawson lived in Owings Mills, MD and was a lifelong member of the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club along with his wife Sarah who preceded him in death. They were the parents of two sons, Jay Price Stump and the late Dawson Stump, Jr. Dawson was a retired insurance executive of Stump, Harvey and Co., and a Korean War Veteran. The son of Augustine Herman Stump, an insurance executive, and Priscilla Ridgley Dawson Penniman Stump, Dawson was born in Baltimore and raised at Chattolance Hill in Baltimore County.
He was a 1945 graduate of Gilman School and attended the University of Virginia from 1946 to 1947, when he was drafted into the Army and served with an artillery unit in Korea during the war. He was discharged in 1953 with the rank of lieutenant and joined his father’s insurance brokerage business. He retired in 1995.
Dawson was one of the longest serving volunteers with the Maryland State Golf Association beginning with him joining the MSGA Executive Committee in 1957 and served until becoming President in 1964. In 1976, Dawson became the Treasurer of the MSGA and held that position until 2000. All total he served the MSGA for over 40 years many as the sidekick to Jack Emich. During his years as Treasurer, Jack and Dawson would take all the tournament entries, do all the pairings and tee times and help conduct the various Championships. So you see he was far more than a Treasurer. He also served as President of the Middle Atlantic Golf Association.
Dawson was also a fine amateur golfer having won the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club Club Championship 3 times and was runner up 4 times. He also won the MSGA Senior Amateur Championship in 1983. In 2012 the MSGA created an Outstanding Achievement Award to honor Maryland golfers who perform admirably in recognized national events, or a Maryland volunteer whose exemplary service in administration of golf deserved recognition. After approving the concept, the next step was very easy…naming the award after a long time servant of the MSGA…Dawson Stump.
