Group B players Joe Lefavor-Tom Clements and 13-handicappers Jeffrey McCandless-Jim Meehan grabbed the scoring spotlight in a Maryland State Golf Association One-Day that attracted 80 players at Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville, August 24.
Lefavor, a scratch player from the U.S. Naval Academy who recently won the Pennsylvania Senior Amateur championship, shot 68 on his own ball (five birdies, one bogey) and he and Naval Academy club mate Clements finished at 68, while McCandless, from Northwest GC, and Meehan, from Laytonsville GC, teamed for a low net of 32-28–60. The tour included four front-nine net birdies and two net birdies and three regular birdies with a stroke each.
In Group A (players were assigned a group based on team handicap), Jeremias Cipriano, Redgate GC, and David Lughermo, University of Maryland GC, took low gross with 69, as Lughermo, another scratch player, highlighted his round with two birdies and an eagle. Bill Balster and Mike Althouse, club mates from Montgomery CC, shot net 35-29–64, helped by a combined five gross birds and two Althouse net birds on the back nine.
In a Mixed group, Montgomery members David Asaki-Sally Lumpkin collected low gross with 77, while Brett Kraimer, Four Streams, and Chris Kraimer, Holly Hills CC, took low net with 33-31–64. Brett is an 11 handicapper, and Chris, 16, and they each contributed to the attack. Brett birdied the par-5 first and the par 4-a15th for net eagles, while Chris had a natural par and three pars with a stroke each to keep the round going.
Two events remain in the series, September 30, at Norbeck CC, and October 16 at Sparrows Point CC.
