105th Maryland Amateur Stroke Play Qualifier Medalist, Kyle Gebhart
Chevy Chase, Md. – Stroke play qualifying for the 105th Maryland Amateur Championship concluded Thursday with five players finishing tied for medalist honors at even-par 70. The tie will be decided in a playoff beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5. The challenging setup yielded no under-par rounds.
Kyle Gebhart of Manor Country Club was the first player among the medalist contenders to return his scorecard. After opening with four consecutive bogeys, Gebhart battled back with birdies on the 7th and 8th. He added three more birdies on the back nine before a closing bogey on the 18th left him at even-par 70.
Patrick Carl of Holly Hills Country Club got off to a fast start with birdies on two of his first three holes. A bogey on the 4th hole and a double bogey on the 9th hole pushed him over par at the turn. Carl’s back nine featured a roller-coaster stretch of birdie, bogey, birdie, bogey before he settled in and birdied the 16th, securing a spot in the playoff for medalist honors at even-par 70.
Zack Miller of Baltimore Country Club played a steady front nine, recording a lone birdie on the 8th hole without a bogey. The back side presented more challenges, as Miller mixed three birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey. A clutch birdie on the 18th hole capped his round and earned him a place in Friday’s playoff at even-par 70.
Aaron Sorkin of Pine Ridge Golf Course rallied late to join the group tied atop the leaderboard. His front nine included a birdie, two bogeys, and a double bogey, and another bogey on the 11th left him with work to do. Sorkin responded with a birdie on the 12th and closed his round with three additional birdies to finish at even-par 70.
Chris Baloga of Country Club of Maryland recovered from a pair of front-nine bogeys with a strong finish. Birdies on the 11th and 13th holes brought him back into contention, and he added one more birdie against a lone bogey over his closing stretch to complete his round at even-par 70.
