Hello, my name is Alec Sharps. I grew up in Lutherville, Maryland and have played golf since I was very little. I have always appreciated the opportunity for community and overall wellness that going out and golfing promotes. In the last five or more years I have become enamored with the wider world of golf; ranging from course architecture to the business dynamics of professional tours. Most of my experience prior to becoming a Boatwright Intern came in the financial services industry as an Equity Research Associate as well as several other internships exploring various financial niches. Most recently, I was able to give back to my community by working as a substitute teacher at my high school alma mater, St. Paul’s, as well as at Calvert.

Why were you interested in an internship with the MSGA?

Working with the MSGA was appealing to me because it provides an opportunity to gain experience across many aspects of golf and see how they all come together to form the golf community that brings so many of us together. I have been incredibly excited to continue to learn about new facets of the game through interacting with members and diving into handicapping and course rating.

When did you start playing golf? Who introduced you to the game?

I have played golf in some form or fashion since I was around five years old. Around that time, my father and grandfather used club credit from an event they played in to buy a set of clubs for me and my brother; in that way they first truly introduced me to golf. I remember being so much more excited to go out and play with my own clubs than I had been before. I have never played competitively but highly appreciate my time on the course for the access to the outdoors, peacefulness of the surroundings, and exercise it provides.

What is your favorite golf course in the area?

My favorite local course is the West Course at Baltimore Country Club. While its Eastern counterpart has the championship pedigree and fascinating architectural history that make it an incredible challenge, I find the West course to be a bit less intimidating and more playable making for a fun round that still has plenty of shots to test your game. I am very much looking forward to expanding my knowledge of local courses and keeping an eye out for any that might reshuffle the top of my list.

What do you like to do when you are not working?

In my free time I prioritize spending time with family and friends, be it on a golf course, a ski mountain, by a body of water or just the easiest restaurant to find a table. I am also an avid fan of the hometown Orioles and the rival Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins and as such make time to root on my teams. Additionally, I have had a growing interest in cooking. I don’t have any one meal or cuisine that I would consider my favorite to make because I enjoy the varied techniques and ingredients that I get to use when experimenting with different dishes. However, the best thing I think I’ve made was either lamb kofta stuffed pitas or my attempt to replicate Carbone’s spicy vodka rigatoni.
