Lutherville, Md. — The Maryland State Golf Association will host the 101st Maryland Junior Amateur and 48th Maryland Girls’ Junior Amateur at Green Spring Valley Hunt Club from Monday, June 23, through Wednesday, June 25. The club has a long history with these championships, having previously hosted both events in 1990 and 2019, as well as the second-ever Girls’ Junior Amateur in 1976.  The Junior Amateur is open to all male amateurs who are residents of Maryland and/or members of MSGA member clubs, with a handicap index requirement of 7.1 or lower. The Girls’ Junior Amateur follows the same eligibility, but with a handicap index requirement of 18.0 or lower.

This year’s championship continues with the 54-hole stroke play format introduced in 2024. After 36 holes, the boys’ field will be cut to the low 30 scores and ties, plus any players within eight strokes of the leading score, to determine who advances to the final round on Wednesday, June 25. For the girls, the cut will be the low 12 scores and ties, and will include players within eight strokes of the leading score. The winner of the Maryland Girls’ Junior Amateur will receive an exemption into the U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur at Atlanta Athletic Club, July 14-19, 2025.

In the Junior Amateur, a name to watch is Owen Newberry of Crofton Country Club. Newberry is the only active former champion in the field, having won the 2023 Maryland Junior Amateur held at Prospect Bay Country Club. Newberry also finished in the top ten of last year’s tournament. Another name to keep an eye on in the field is Carson Looney of Congressional Country Club. Looney enters the field coming off a semifinal appearance in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball earlier this year, and he finished in the top five in last year’s event.

In the Girls’ Junior Amateur, Zoe Cusack of Congressional Country Club returns to defend her title after a strong performance in 2024. She’ll look to go back-to-back, which was last accomplished by Irene Kim (2021 and 2022). Abigail Avallone of Congressional Country Club returns after winning the 2023 Maryland Girls’ Junior Amateur and a top-three finish in last year’s tournament. Joelle Johnson of Youth on Course Maryland also returns to the field looking for hardware of her own after finishing runner-up back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024.
