Urbana, MD. – Over two rain-soaked days at 125th U.S. Open Local Qualifying, 126 players battled it out for seven qualifying spots and two alternate spots at Worthington Manor Golf Club for a chance to move on to 125th U.S. Open Final Qualifying.
Earning medalist honors was Jake Sollon of Venetia, Pennsylvania, who shot 36-33–69 to go 3-under-par. Sollon’s performance was bolstered by five birdies—three of which came in the final four holes—and only two bogeys, sending him through to Final Qualifying.
Zack Henry of Winchester, Virginia, finished 2-under-par with a 35-35–70. With four birdies and just two bogeys, Henry overcame the elements to claim the second Final Qualifying spot.
Ryan Siegler, George Duangmanee, and Jimmy Zheng all tied for third at 1-under-par. Siegler, a Towson University graduate and Baltimore local, shot 37-34–71 with two birdies on the back nine to overcome a slow start and secure his place in Final Qualifying. Duangmanee, a University of Virginia graduate from Fairfax, Virginia, carded a 35-36–71, making two birdies in the rain. Zheng, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and a recent Duke University graduate, posted a 37-34–71 with three birdies on the back nine.
Will Mullally and Argyle Downes captured the final qualifying spots, both finishing at even par. Mullally, from Chevy Chase, Maryland, shot 36-36–72 with two birdies and two bogeys. Downes, a freshman at Rutgers University from Charles Town, West Virginia, followed suit with a 35-37–72, surviving a back-and-forth back-nine (started on 10) in which he carded three birdies and two bogeys. On his final hole, hole 9, Downes sank a birdie to secure the final qualifying position.
On Tuesday morning, Tommy Evans and Sean Bosdosh earned their way into a five-man playoff for two alternate spots. Evans, also from Charles Town, West Virginia, finished 1-over-par with a 34-39–73, sinking a birdie on the second playoff hole to secure the first alternate spot. Bosdosh, of Clarksburg, Maryland, shot 37-36–73 and made par on the second playoff hole to claim the second alternate spot.
