Saint Michael’s, M.D. – The Links at Perry Cabin, designed by legendary architect Pete Dye, set the stage for the 2024 Maryland Mixed Two-Ball Championship. On a perfect day for golf, Sarah Spicer and Cole Baldwin from Argyle Country Club came out on top with a 3-under-par (69) to win the title in back-to-back years. Last year, they won the championship at Lakewood Country Club in Rockville.
The round didn’t start as smoothly as they would have liked, with bogeys on the 2nd, 6th, and 7th holes, leaving them with some work. Despite the shaky front nine, Spicer and Baldwin kept their composure and saved their best play for the back nine, where they took control of the round.
Starting with a birdie on the 10th hole, the duo found their rhythm and never looked back. They birdied holes 10, 11, and 13 to build momentum. The highlight of their round came on the signature island green par-3 17th, where they made a birdie. They sealed their victory with a birdie on the 18th hole to complete the back nine with a score of 31. Finishing in second was Simon Haggar and Caroline Barbeau from Bretton Woods Recreation Center. In third place was the Chevy Chase duo of Clare Connolly and Carter Stewart. Spicer and Connolly are competing in the upcoming U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Brae Burn Country Club in Massachusetts.
In the Senior Division, Marlies Empey and Michael Leopare won with a score of 6-over-par (78). They were able to make a birdie on the 18th hole to secure the win over Thomas and Carol Kersch, who finished at 7-over-par (79).
The Maryland State Golf Association would like to thank The Links at Perry Cabin and their staff for hosting the event and providing a memorable day for all competitors.
