The 37th Maryland State Mid-Amateur Championship at Green Spring Valley Hunt Club proved to be a spectacular display of golf, featuring a combination of perfect weather and immaculate course conditions. The players were gifted with two days of stunning weather that could only be described as “perfect” for golf.
After the first round concluded, Billy Peel was the leader after shooting a remarkable 7-under-par, 65, in the afternoon. Defending Champion Kevin Grady was able to make the cut after shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the morning. After the first round, five golfers were tied for second place, each carding an impressive 3-under-par score of 69. Rij Patel, Patrick McCormick, Zack Miller, Tracy Vallandingham, and Vance Welch all put themselves in the hunt after their first-round performances.
In the end, Billy Peel emerged as the champion, maintaining his lead throughout the tournament. Though he shot an even-par score of 72 in the second round, his remarkable first-round performance secured his victory. This is Peel’s first Mid-Amateur championship. With this win, Peel moves to first in the Player of the Year standings. Green Spring Valley Hunt Club is a comfortable and familiar place for Peel. He won his second Maryland Amateur in 2020 at GSVHC. That year he faced Rij Patel in the final 36-hole match.
While Billy Peel claimed the championship, Ben Shields and Ryan McCarthy shot the low rounds on the second day, shooting a 3-under-par, 69.
The success of the 37th Maryland State Mid-Amateur Championship would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Michael Adkins and the entire Green Spring Valley Hunt Club staff. Their outstanding efforts in preparing and maintaining the course, ensuring smooth operations, and providing a welcoming environment contributed to the tournament’s overall excellence. Congratulations to Billy Peel IV for claiming the well-deserved victory and to all the participants for making this championship remarkable.
