On Monday June 12, the Women’s Maryland State Mid-Amateur Championship was held at Talbot Country Club in Easton, Maryland. Forty-two competitors played the par 72, 5390-yard course. Both gross and net prizes were awarded. Early afternoon players were surprised by the weather dely.
Just before the final group of the day was able to tee-off, the sirens sounded, suspending play for a brief 35 minutes due to lightning. Fortunately, all players were able to finish their rounds after play was resumed. A few sprinkles followed throughout the day, but conditions remained playable, contrary to the forecast.
Defending Champion Elisabeth Herzfeld-Rice, from Clustered Spires Golf Club and a resident of Germantown, Maryland, got the victory with a score of one-over-par (73) to defeat Carol Davies (79) of Argyle Country Club. Elisabeth’s round included all but two pars on the front nine, and three birdies on the back. Elisabeth Herzfeld-Rice has claimed her second Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, back-to-back!
