Beginning this 2023 season, the MSGA will honor a Women’s Player of the Year and Senior Women’s Player of the Year at its Annual Meeting every November. this award aims to honor the female amateur from the Maryland/D.C. area that compiles an outstanding performance record during the season. Players will earn points based on their finishing position and/or qualification for certain state, regional, and national championships. The player who accumulates the most points, and must be a member of an MSGA member club, will be awarded the distinction of “Women’s Player of the Year,” and the senior player will be honored as the “ Senior Women’s Player of the Year.” These players will receive a plaque to award their accomplishment as well as social media and website recognition.
The MSGA remains committed to elevating and enhancing opportunities for women in golf at all levels. For competitive players, the MSGA opened the opportunity for non-Maryland Amateurs to compete in the Women’s Open Championship in 2022 for the first time, skyrocketing participation to a record high. In 2023, the MSGA will host its first Ladies’ Nine-and-Wine to engage new female golfers and provide a fun, casual nine hole scramble, with wine and hors d’oeuvres to follow, as an opportunity to get to know the MSGA staff and volunteers and meet new golfers.
The Maryland and Washington D.C. golf community has a depth of incredible female talent and we are proud and excited to recognize the accomplishments of our top-level female competitors in 2023 and beyond. With the implementation of the Women’s Player of the Year Award, it is our hope to grow competitive women’s golf at the local level.
