January 2023
This coming year promises to be a memorable one, as was 2022. Thanks in large part to Diane Herndon for her outstanding job as president. Diane is one of the most passionate golf people I know, and she has agreed to stay on the MSGA board as treasurer. The MSGA is fortunate to have someone as skilled as Diane.
Our staff, headed by executive director, Kelly Newland, did an outstanding job this past year. They ran the tournaments, fundraisers, course ratings, and managed large increase in the number of golfers seeking a USGA handicap. They have scheduled some fantastic venues for our 2023 championships.
The men’s amateur will be at the recently renovated Chartwell Country Club, and the Open is at Hillendale Country Club. Greenspring Valley Hunt Club will host the Mid-Am championship, and the Senior Am will be played at Glen Riddle Golf Club in Berlin, MD.
On the women’s side, the am site is still waiting for confirmation as of this time. The Open, however, is set for Worthington Manor GC, the Mid-Am at Talbot Country Club, and the Senior Am at P. B. Dye Golf Club.
One of the missions of the MSGA is to grow the game of golf in Maryland. There is no better way than by getting our youth exposed to this great sport. Last year I’m pleased to say that our Youth On Course program has grown for the third consecutive year. Thanks to everyone that played and donated to make this worthwhile program a success.
As in 2019, the USGA has introduced some rule changes that take effect starting January 1, 2023. Please use the MSGA or USGA websites to learn more.
Our continued success would not be possible without the MSGA member clubs, my fellow board members, volunteers, and participants. Many thanks to all of you.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of you this coming year. Until then, fairways and greens,
Ted Florenz
President
