Towson, Md. – The 33rd Senior Challenge matches were held at the Country Club of Maryland Wednesday, November 2 and the hosts, Team MSGA, came away victorious after shooting a team total 13-over-par. The par 70 6,261-yard course provided a great test under sunny skies for some of the region’s best senior golfers.
The invitational event features teams from the Maryland State Golf Association, Golf Association of Philadelphia/Delaware State Golf Association, and New Jersey State Golf Association in an annual stroke play tournament hosted by one of the associations. Each team has eight male senior players, and the lowest six scores are counted.
Team MSGA was led by 2022 Senior Player of the Year, Vance Welch who carded a 3-under-par 67. Welch, a member at Hobbit’s Glen GC, kept a clean card that featured three birdies and no bogeys. Tom Winegardner, from The Cannon Club, recorded a 1-over-par 71 helped to add to the victory. The 2022 Senior Amateur Champion also tallied three birdies on the day. A pair of 72’s from Manor CC’s Michael Garner and the Chevy Chase Club’s Carter Steuart kept the pressure on Team GAP who finished runners-up.
The final two counting scores were Norbeck CC’s Walter Jew who fired a 4-over-par, 74 and Worthington Manor GC’s Lee Flemister who shot a 77. Also competing on the team were Tucker Sampson from Manor CC who also shot a 77 and Greg Henry from Beaver Creek CC who shot an 83.
This was the MSGA’s 12th victory since the inception of the matches in 1995.
